I’m going to be trying something new for the next few months and creating an end-of-the-month roundup of content that I’ve found valuable as a mother and deem worthy of sharing. I'm calling it, "That Time of the Month." Subscribers can expect “That Time of the Month” to land in their inbox, oh, every 28 days or so. Who knows, maybe it’ll come early and surprise the hell out of you. (I just hope it doesn’t come late!) Hang onto your pants!
So what can you expect? I’ll be highlighting a wide range of content including videos, Instagram posts, personal essays, music, books, artwork, etc. Some of it will be practical and informative, while other bits might be inspirational, nurturing, or hilarious. Basically, any content that circumnavigates the parenting/caregiving realm is fair game. Take what you want, leave what you don’t. Here we go!
Six Reasons Why Kids are Assholes in December (plus four tips for surviving until January) by
. The countdown is here. There’s officially less than one week until Christmas. (Yikes!) If you’re looking for practical advice to help you and your kids cope with the stress of the remaining holiday season, and those upcoming family gatherings, this is it. Plus, Melinda’s humor provides some much-needed holiday season comedic relief.Melinda Wenner Moyer is a journalist who covers parenting, science, and medicine. For more of her work, check out her book How to Raise Kids Who Aren't Assholes.
“NANANA NAVIDAD,” an original holiday tune reflecting concern for the war in Gaza written by a mother and her two sons. The world needs more music like this. It offers hope while addressing the severity of the situation. Please listen. And if you missed my post where I highlight “NANANA NAVIDAD” and talk about how I’ve been parenting in light of the Israel-Hamas war, you can read it here.
“Five Stages of Parenting,” a brief comedy segment from comedienne, spots nut, and “old mom,” Sarah Tiana had me laughing my ass off and feeling so seen. Yes, yes, yes. Parenting in those difficult moments most definitely feels like we’re tearing through the 5 stages of grief over and over and over again. Now we can all take a step back and laugh about it.
Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood by
. Mom Rage is a frank, feminist examination of the hidden crisis of rage facing American mothers with practical advice on how we can fix it. I highly recommend this book for all moms (and dads!) who hope to find balance and understanding in their relationship and parenting journeys. Earlier this month I highlighted Minna’s book in my post “Angry Mommy.” If you missed it, you can read it here.
That’s all for this month. I’m curious to hear what you think about the first “That Time of the Month!” You can leave your thoughts/feedback about this December’s monthly roundup in the comments. And if you’ve got a piece of parenting content that you’re dying to share, please pass it along!
As always, thanks for being here and for being a part of this online community. Parenting is f*cking hard, and so much better when we’re in it together. If you know a fellow parent or friend who might enjoy this content, it’d make me happy if you passed it along. Thank you!
Wonderful addition, Chelsea - love the name 😂👍
